... is the satellite dish. Or so I have been told.

Anyway, I’m headed that-a-way next week, basically crossing the state from West-to-East, and back again about a week later. Anything in particular to look out for, both positive (roadside attractions or must-eats) or negative (funky laws or heavy-handed enforcement)?

You’ll probably see a lot of people picking litter off the roadside. Tennessee is full of Volunteers.

In California, they wear orange jumpsuits and we call them prisoners. Is that the same thing?

They do wear a lot of orange, so maybe?

I think the Tail of the Dragon and its surrounding roads go into Eastern TN, probably worth checking out

http://tailofthedragonmaps.com/great-roads/

Or you can check out Great Smokey Mountain Park, which the Tail of the Dragon goes through.

Tail of the Dragon... spoken of in hushed tones by those that know.

I just might check it out. Not sure of my schedule, but if I can I will make some time. I’ll be in a rental, which everyone knows is like the fastest car ever. Then again, my passenger freaks out seeing brakelights ahead of us, so I may need to see if I can go solo for a day. Thanks for the heads-up!

The official bird of the city of Madison, WI is the plastic pink flamingo.

Seriously .

That highway splits- one part is the Tail, the other is the Cherohala Skyway. From what I’ve been told, it’s best to take the Skyway. Not as many people take it so it’s not needlessly dangerous thanks to a bunch of idiots driving beyond their limits. Plus I’ve heard the scenery is better. And if you can’t take it solo that day, I would definitely say go with the Skyway. The Tail is probably going to be bad enough this time of year to ensure your passenger has some sort of mental breakdown from stress.

Actually, it’s a noxious weed called goldenrod that it shares with Kentucky, Virginia, and perhaps a couple of others. If you’re allergic to it, your life sucks every September. It really sucks if you’re in Tennessee.

My pic dump from earlier this morning is in Memphis. Must-eats in Memphis include Ching’s wings, The Germantown Commissary, swanky’s tacos, Jerry’s snow cones, and Pete and Sam’s. Going on I-40, most cops will allow about 10 over, but some places are stricter than others. As far as attractions, Bowling Green (where the Corvette is made) is about an hour north of Nashville and the factory and museum are both really cool. Nashville has the Lane Motor Museum (do the basement tour), Chattanooga has Honest Charlie’s speed shop and the Coker collection (they're at the same place), Nashville also has some amazing C&C meets on Saturdays, gatlinburg has the smokies/TOTD, and that's all I can think of at the moment.

The state flower of Tennessee is the iris, if I'm not mistaken.

Yeah, that’s the one thing I’ve heard about The Tail, is that everybody and their mother is out there if the weather is even remotely nice. At which point, I could just sit in traffic at home and be less likely to hit a motorcycle. I appreciate the advice, thank you!

I was just looking at Devil’s Triangle, too, which may be closer to where I’m staying. Looks fun!

I echo what Rockthrillz89 said. I have never been myself, but from what I hear that Skyway road and some of the other surrounding roads are actually more fun and less crowded than the “tail of the dragon” road itself. Just check out the map and you can see how the roads twist out in every direction around the area.

Just drop your passenger off for a hike at the Park and meet for lunch after you have a little fun on the roads! If i were you, I’d rent the smallest car possible for maximum fun! No need to drive like a madman but you can enjoy the twisties.

I joke about abusing my rental, but in reality I’m the guy who is loathe to put another person’s property at risk. I’m sure I can still enjoy a rented Altima at 5/10’s.

Looking at a map of the area, it seems like they are all fun roads out there!

HELL YES! The factory tour is about a mile of walking and takes an hour to 45 minutes but I don't know whether there is an age restriction or anything. If there is, the museum is pretty cool too. But I can't say enough about the Lane. I'm sure he would love that too. I first went when I was like 6 and have been in love ever since.

I thought the state flower of TN was roadkill possum... or was that GA?

And that the state bird was the mosquito. Or it it the middle finger (ba-dum)? Anyway, somebody said the state flower was the iris (which variety, I have no idea). The bird is the Eastern Cardinal, same as the aforementioned states, Ohio, Indiana, North Carolina (I think), and probably several others in its native range.
